A beautiful 10-year-old black girl named Izzy “Izzy” Tichenor committed suicide last Saturday after being bullied by her classmates. The family’s attorney told MTO News that Izzy’s death, according to her family, could have been avoided had her school not ignored their complaints.
“Izzy was a happy child. She was a happy little girl, she did well in school… All she wanted was to be in touch with family and friends,” attorney Tyler Ayres told MTO News just before the family’s private funeral Saturday morning. .
The tragedy comes just weeks after the Department of Justice publicly detailed a disturbing pattern in which black and Asian American students in the Davis School District in Farmington, Utah, have been subjected to racial harassment for years, and officials willfully ignore the complaints of parents and students. The Justice Department detailed the pattern in a report and settlement agreement released in October. The agency has been investigating the school district since July 2019.

Izzy’s mother and stepfather, Brittany Clark, Tichenor Cox and Charles Cox, said they learned of their daughter’s bullying in September.
“They found her taking a bottle of Febreze to school, and when they asked her why they said it was because the kids said it was smelly,” Iris told CNN, adding that her teacher told her to sit away from the other students in the back of the school. classroom.
The lawyer for Izzy’s family said the kids used the ‘n’ word and teased Izzy over and over.
According to Iris, Brittany and Charles sought out Izzy’s teacher to file their complaint, but “when they realized they weren’t making any progress…they went to the principal. The principal turned them into the vice principal and the vice principal of the school felt very unheard and neglected.”
