Brian Laundry, Gabi Pettito’s boyfriend, committed suicide, according to family attorney

On Tuesday, Brian Laundry’s family attorney said he was shot in the head.

Laundry has been the subject of a manhunt for over a month as investigators search for clues into the murder of his girlfriend, Gabe Pettito, during their cross-country truck trip together.

In a statement, attorney Steve Bertolino said Laundry’s parents had been told the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and that the method of death was suicide.

“Chris and Roberta continue to mourn the loss of their son and hope that these results will lead to the closure of both families,” Bertolino said.

Laundrie’s skeleton remains were found on a nature preserve in Florida, and were positively identified last month using dental records.

The discovery of the remains concluded an extensive search involving federal, state and local law enforcement that began shortly after Laundry’s disappearance on September 14, two weeks after the 23-year-old returned alone to his parents’ home in North Port, Florida.

But the investigation into Pettito’s murder is far from over. But Laundry has only been identified by law enforcement officials as a significant person in the case.

Pettito’s family reported her missing on September 11, triggering a search that attracted worldwide media attention and, in Laundry’s case, focused largely on the Carlton Reserve wilderness park near Laundry’s home. It is a densely wooded, swampy area that is home to crocodiles, wolves, cats, snakes, and many other creatures.

Pettito’s remains were discovered on September 19 at the edge of Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, one of the places the young couple visited on the trip they documented through videos on social media. Authorities said the body had been there about a month ago.

An autopsy in Wyoming concluded that Pettito had died of suffocation and that it was a murder. Laundry was listed as a “person of interest” in her murder but was only charged with fraudulent use of a debit card that did not belong to him.
