It has become a much-loved tradition here at CBC to run exciting winter-themed writing competitions Twitter @cbcreative and Instagram @curtisbrowncreative to help celebrate the holiday season. Read on to find out how to participate in this year’s competitions…

Twitter: #5ActFestiveStory

Every December, the popular monthly Twitter contest #WriteCBC gets a festive twist. Instead of running for one day, he runs for an entire week. This year’s #5ActFestiveStory will begin with a written message from Special Guest Irinosen Okoji!

from From Monday 29 November to Monday 6 DecemberWe will ask you to contribute to #5ActFestiveStory on Twitter @cbcreative, with new works to be written by You are all week days.

The festive story will be a collaboration, with each of the five works written by different members of our writing community. Each day we’ll choose a winning answer to shape the next chapter in the story – each winner gets a free place on one of our six-week online courses, worth £210. And who knows, there may be more surprises — and prizes — along the way; We’re coming to Christmas, after all…

We are very pleased that Special Guest Irenesen Okoji will provide the impetus to serve as a starting point for our story. Irenesen is a British-Nigerian writer. She was named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Letters in 2018, and her short stories have been published in the United States, Africa and the United Kingdom. her first novel, butterfly fish, published in 2015, which won the 2016 Betty Trask Award. Her short story collection, Speak giantPublished in 2016. Shortlisted for the 2016 inaugural Jhalak Award and the 2017 Edge Hill Short Story Award. Collection of short stories, slugs, published in 2019. Longlisted for the 2020 Jhalak Prize. The story ‘Grace Jones’ won the 2020 AKO Caine Prize for African Writing. In 2021 she was awarded the MBE Medal for Services to Literature. a novel, kurandera, in 2022.

Irenesen is also one of the judges for Discoveries 2022, the writing development program for unpublished novels – run by the Women Prize Trust, Curtis Brown, Curtis Brown Creative and Audible. How it works:

Monday November 29, 11am (UK time) – Irenosen’s written claim letter will be posted and competition opens! Tweet your response in response to our Pinned Tweet with #5ActFestiveStory as of 10am (UK time) on Tuesday 30th November.

Tuesday 30 November 11am (UK time) – We will post the winning entry, and ask you to respond with the second act. Tweet your response by 10am (UK time) on Wednesday 2nd December, and we’ll post the winning entry by 11am.

And it continues in the same way until Chapter 5, when we’ll give you a little more time – we invite posts on Friday 3 December from 11am (UK time) and give you until 10am (UK time) on Monday 6 December to post your end to the story.

We’ll be posting an important tip and blog post on Monday, November 29th, adding it throughout the week with additional tips on how to get involved. This is also where we will publish the winning ‘works’ in our story.

Five winners will receive a free six-week study place (worth £210). Each day will also select two contestants to receive a £50 off course.

Some rules…

  • Only one entry per person per day of the challenge, please
  • Free place award winners/discounts winners can choose between: creative writing for beginners, character development, deep dive, start writing your novel, write at the end of your novel, edit and showcase your novel, write memoirs, write short stories, write psychological thriller and write historical novels and write a novel Crime, romance novel writing, poetry writing. Or you can use your prize on one of our six-week online picture book courses: Drawing a Children’s Picture Book or Writing a Children’s Picture Book
  • If you receive more than one discount offer, you can only redeem one offer per course registration
  • Discounts and free places are only valid for courses running in 2022
  • If the winner has already paid and registered for one of the applicable courses (not yet run), we will refund the fee/discount (as applicable)
  • If the winner or runner-up has already taken all relevant courses, they may submit their discount or full fee (as applicable) to another writer.
  • Prizes cannot be exchanged for cash

How it works:

Monday 6 December 11am (UK time) – Ayesha’s writing message will be posted on Instagram and the contest will open! You will be asked to complete a story. Subscribers must post the story before Friday 10 December, 10am (UK time).

At the end of the competition, we will select a winning participant, and they will receive a free place on one of our six-week online courses, valued at £210. Three runners-up will receive £50 vouchers to use on the six-week course of their choice.

To enter the #CBCWinterStory you must:

  • Like job competition
  • Comment below the contest post with your short story max 150 words (excluding claim)
  • Please leave only one entry per person
  • Public accounts only please
  • This giveaway does not belong to Instagram
  • Contest ends at 10.00 AM on Friday 10 December (UK time) and the winner will be announced in our Stories and on this blog at 11:00 AM on Friday 10 December (UK time)
