Review: Lovesac StealthTech (2021) | wired

The StealthTech line includes a center channel that plugs into your TV (and then wirelessly connects to your subwoofer). This center channel on its own looks great, like adding a standard speaker to your TV. But the real draw is clearly the hidden speakers and subwoofer in the sofa itself.

The subtle surround sound is impressive. My scary movie marathons in October were even scarier with this system. I watched again Signs For the hundredth time, hearing an alien clicking sound coming from above my shoulder was chilling.

There is a remote for quick control, but the app is a great addition. I chose the layout of my sofa and the location of each piece from StealthTech – there are currently only recommended layouts, so if your designs are different, you can only choose what’s closest to it. I was also able to choose the color and type of fabric for my cover so that the sound is set properly to move through.

You can switch between four sound modes: Movies, Music, TV and News. These automatically adjust the speakers and subwoofer based on what Lovesac thinks works best with this mode, but you can tweak as you like, add more bass, and adjust speaker balance and treble. You can also turn off the system completely, which I do when I just want some background noise from the TV.

Sactionals are meant to be organized and reorganized as you add more pieces or change your living space. You can make antique U-shaped, L-shaped, square or regular sofas. In theory, it’s easy to assemble – no tools are needed and all the pieces are attached to wooden clips and boxes called tap-toe boots.

Practically speaking, they are actually quite annoying and hard to deal with, and the pieces come too much Heavy chests. They ship via FedEx, so you might want to get some cash or freshly baked goodies for your delivery driver. For that price, someone has to come and set it up for you.

Trying to add the new sides and subwoofer seat to my completed setup was a tiring to do on my own. I ended up waiting for my partner to come home to help me finish. When everything was done, I couldn’t figure out why the subwoofer wasn’t working. Then I realized the plug came out of the actual appliance, which was under the seat. I had to pick up everything. I wish it was designed along the same lines as the storage benches you might find on an Ikea sofa, which are hinged, so if you need to reset or reattach the hardware, you can just lift the top of the seat. Lovesac has storage seats, but they are not subwoofer compatible.

It must be money

Lovesac Sactionals is one of the best sofas we’ve tried, but it’s also one of the most expensive. A standard three-seat sofa, which in Luvsack world has three seats and five sides, costs nearly $4,000.
