The five people killed by a driver who crashed into a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin, have been identified on Sunday evening.

Waukesha Police Chief Daniel Thompson read the names at a Monday noon news conference: Virginia Sorenson, 79; Lana Owen, 71 years old; Tamara Durand, 52 years old; Jane Kulich, 52 years old; and Wilhelm Hospel, 81. Mr. Thompson also confirmed that the number of infections had risen from 40 to 48.

Police said the suspected driver, Daryl Brooks, 39, faces five counts of first-degree murder. He is allegedly involved in a “domestic feud” moments before he was driven on the show road, and court records show he had an extensive rap newspaper going back to 1999.

A video clip of the tragedy showed a red SUV that sped away at high speed amid the band members and fans walking in close formation, hitting several people and distracting the crowd.

Witnesses described the accident as “horrific” and said the “quiet” driver was “moving from side to side, targeting people”.

Wisconsin Children’s Hospital, a children’s hospital in Milwaukee, confirmed it had treated 18 minor victims, ages 3 to 16. Six of the child victims required surgery and 10 remained in the intensive care unit as of Monday noon.

The ‘Dancing Grannies’ Facebook group has been destroyed after the attack

Several members of the Milwaukee Dancing Grannies were among the five killed in the Waukesha Christmas Parade attack.

The members are Virginia Sorenson, 79, Lana Owen, 71, and Tamara Durand, 52. Wilhelm Hospel, 81 was closely associated with the group.

The dance group, in a Facebook post after the incident, said it was “shattered” and those who died were “very passionate grandmothers”.

“Milwaukee’s dancing grandmothers have been devastated by this terrible tragedy with loss of life and injury at the Waukesha Christmas Parade,” the group wrote.

Our group was doing what they love, performing in front of the crowds in a procession putting smiles on the faces of all ages, filling them with joy and happiness. While the grandmothers performed, they enjoyed hearing the cheers of the crowd and the applause that brought smiles to their faces and warmed their hearts.

“Those who died were very excited grandmothers. Their eyes sparkled…..joy to be Grannie. They were the glue…. brought us together. Our hearts are heavy at this most difficult time, as more information and updates will be posted.”

“Please keep them on their families, friends, dancing grandmothers of Milwaukee, and everyone who lives forever in your thoughts and prayers.”

The Dancing Grannies describes themselves on Facebook as “a group of grandmothers who meet once a week to run the routine for summer and winter walks.” They have been performing at rallies since 1984.
