Who What Wear Podcast: Heidi Gardner

You’ve never gone to duct tape [of Saturday Night Live]?

I forgot that part! I see all these things that I have seen in my whole life. The fan in me is like, “Oh my God.”

I’m on that stage, and she’s like, “I want to take a picture,” and the stage manager, Chris, is like, “Five, four, three” and then he points to me, and I have to do the audition.

I don’t remember the first test. It was like an adrenaline rush and just do your thing. I walked away like, “I’ve heard people laugh, but I can’t remember it, and I don’t know.” I’m in my head so hard, then I go home.

did you read the Live from New York the book?

You know, if I get a meeting, that’s a good sign, but I didn’t get a meeting. I came home the next day.

I got a call a week later like, “Hey, they want you to come back and test again, but this time, you have to do a whole new set.”

It was like, “Oh my God, but I made my own A-list stuff.” First, I was freaked out — like, “I’ve done everything I can do. What am I going to come up with now?”

I was able to be like, ‘You know what. The fact that you’ve been performing non-stop for a year and a half now there’s a lot of things I’ve tried for sketch shows where the sketch didn’t work. But I remembered that character worked, working 20 seconds Oh, they liked that person. They liked that line.”

that’s what my SNL The tests were, I tried to show as much as possible in five minutes. The first was 12 characters long. The second was like 11.… My second audition in SNL They were all the bench players on my basketball team, and they finally had to play. I think that got me the job. You know, I mean, they both did – I’m sure.
